Show Up

The term show up has become a popular phrase as it is widely used by almost all and sundry. As popular as it is, so is its definition. To show up in simple terms is to become visible or noticeable. And to become noticeable is to be capable of being detected, easily seen and understandable.

A reasonable amount of success is recorded when you show up. There's a difference between being present in a place and showing up. One can be present in a place and yet invisible. But showing up means you are present and you are visible and noticeable. Each of us has unique presence such that when we show up in areas where we specialise, tremendous things happen. It's now left for us to identify those things we are good at such that when we show up, value is added. I mean showing up in areas of relevance. This links me to the word "excellence", which means being at your best, the best way you can. How do you know people who are excellent at what they do? They don't just make up the number wherever they find themselves, they show up for a good course.

Ssometimes, these responsibilities can be so demanding especially when you have a lot of things to put together or tidy up amidst your rest time, yet even in the midst of all these, you still make out time to show up. Why would you want to make efforts to show up? Let me guess! You know you would be singled out, identifiable, and recognized. In other words, you would be visible or noticeable. Also, there is this confidence that speaks of the capacity you have built over time, meaning that you can deliver at any time when called upon. In addition, whatever you do all the time, unconsciously or consciously, it becomes a way of life to you.

I've always nurtured this belief system for long: if you are good at what you do, don't sweat it out or stress out because you don't need to announce yourself, your works will announce you. And even when you don't want to be noticeable or visible, I mean even when you don't want to show up, you just can't hide or help it. This is because you have carve a nitche for yourself that has come to outlive you such that people look forward to your showing up.

Make no mistakes about it, there are certain persons who if they were to make wishes, they would wish that certain people don't show up, so they can have all the time and space to oppress the weak. But you see, life has a way of balancing off things. And to think that we don't always get everything we wish, makes life even more worthwhile. One of my resolves in life, is to make sure wherever I find myself, I leave a mark, legacy, something to be remembered for, and it has somehow guided my steps (moves) in all my endeavours. So now that we understand what it means to be visible, are we going to show up?
